Position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration, Environmental Management Service, in the Salisbury VA Medical Center. The primary purpose of the position is to lead those engaged in janitorial and custodial work that requires substantial physical effort to operate, adjust heavy duty cleaning equipment, climb ladders, apply a significant knowledge of infection control, hazardous waste procedures to ensure compliance with safety and health directives.
Duties
The EVS Technician - Leader (PD#5168) position performs leader duties for Housekeeping staff. Duties include but are not limited to:
Relays instructions received from supervisors to employees assigned to position's areas of responsibility.
Works along with other employees setting the work pace.
Maintains current knowledge of, and answers questions of other workers assigned to position's area of responsibility on procedures, policies, written instructions.
Ensures areas of responsibility are adequately staffed and adjusts staffing levels accordingly.
Work Schedule: Applicant must be able to work all shifts to include weekends

Physical Requirements: Workers move and control heavy equipment; carry, set up and work from ladders and scaffolds; and frequently lift and move objects weighing about 40 pounds and occasionally objects weighing over 50 pounds. Another Situation at the Grade 2 level involves occasional moderately heavy physical effort in order to move, set up and work from ladders and scaffolds. Use of heavy powered cleaning equipment, such as wall washers and industrial type buffers is required, but not on a continual basis.
This position performs continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing; lifting and moving heavy objects such as heavy duty cleaning equipment and other objects; and climbing ladders and scaffolds
Working Conditions: The employee usually works indoors in areas that normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation. They are exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc. Care is also required to avoid serious injuries when working with heavy powered equipment and working on ladders and scaffolding.
The work is normally performed in indoor areas that have adequate heat, light, and ventilation; however, employee may work outdoors at times. The incumbent is exposed to dirt and disagreeable odors and is exposed to conditions inherent in cleaning tasks such as chapped hands, and irritation from cleaning compounds and detergents. There is a chance of minor injuries (cuts, bruises).
