You will serve as a Technician (Assistant Radiation Safety Officer) in the Ordnance Assurance & Safety Office (00SA) of NAVSURFWARCEN IH DIV. The NT-05 pay band encompasses positions equivalent to the GS-13 and GS-14. The salary range shown above represents all of the positions within the band, including high grade positions. This is not a high grade position; therefore, the salary may be limited to a GS-13 Step 10 (currently $153,354).

Duties

You will serve as the Assistant Radiation Safety Officer of NSWC IHEODTD and will be responsible for assisting in the implementation and maintenance of an effective Radiation Safety Program. You will ensure the Program complies with DoN and other federal regulations including RAD-010 and conditions of a Naval Radioactive Material Permit issued to the Command, its detachments, and sites that require this service. You will assist with the formulation of policy on the controls for hazards associated with radiation sources and ensure the effectiveness of these measures. You will assist with the maintenance of the Command policy on radiation safety, and provide advice and technical assistance on all matters related to radiation safety requirements and procedures. You will assist with the promulgation and supervision of radiological controls/radiation safety program for the Command (i.e. supervising the storage, issue, use, and disposition of radioactive sources). You will ensure Navy directives are followed by developing, coordinating, participating in training of radiographers and personnel to ensure they are properly instructed in the hazards associated with radiation producing equipment being used. You will participate in the evaluation of radiographers performance testing. You will assist with the communication between the Command and the Radiological Affairs Support Office (RASO) to coordinate the Radiological Controls and Radiation Health Programs. You will assist with the maintenance of the inventory of radiography equipment. You will perform surveys, inspections (i.e. radiation protection), and audits as required to ensure compliance with up-to-date radiation safety policy and other Navy directives, Navy Radioactive Materials Permit (NRMP), and federal regulations. You will maintain current, all applicable NRMPs by assisting with the submittal of amendments, renewals, or termination requests to RASO in a timely manner. You will ensure that any radiation protection program deficiencies are corrected in a timely manner and that personnel exposure to sources or ionizing radiation are maintained As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA). You will assist with the investigation of emergencies, accidents, and incidents and report to RASO in accordance with requirements of RAD-010. You will assist with the review and approval of all radiography operating documented procedures and equipment procedures.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals).
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the NT-04 (GS-11/12) grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: providing technical oversight and direction on radiation control requirements and procedures in support of a radiation safety program.
