About the Position: U.S. Army Public Health Command enhancing Army readiness by identifying and assessing current and emerging health threats, developing and communicating public health solutions, and assuring the quality and effectiveness of the Army's Public Health Enterprise. Incumbent serves as the senior biological science technician in the ISO17025-accredited, Public Health Command, East (PHC, East), environmental public health laboratory.

Duties

Serve as the senior technician in the public health laboratory, Public Health Command – East (PHC – East) Responsible for a variety of specialized molecular laboratory procedures in support of vector-borne disease and public health surveillance. Serves as the senior biological science technician responsible for oversight of daily operations for the PHC, East Environmental Laboratory. Supports the ISO17025-based Quality System by documenting laboratory findings, noting where laboratory procedures are out of specification, and in preparing periodic reports to be reviewed and acted upon by laboratory management. Oversees the comprehensive laboratory training program and ensures that the Lab maintains full mission capability.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Position is a Testing Designated Position subject to applicant testing and random drug.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • Incumbent may be required to work weekends and after-duty hours.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.

OR Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position, such as Biology, Animal Science, Wildlife Management, Laboratory Sciences, Genetics, or a related science. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: BiologyPlanning and EvaluatingTechnical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-08).
