The Supervisory DRT occupies the position of Supervisory Radiologic Technologist in a large, complex, tertiary care, affiliated medical center. The technologist functions as a supervisor for a group of employees at the GS-9 level and below which may include support staff. The incumbent has the full delegated responsibility to plan, develop, direct, and control designated technological operations within the service.

a. The incumbent has responsibility for making and implementing the technologist decisions regarding Diagnostic Service that directly affect patient care.
b. The incumbent will teach, guide, and direct the image analysis and quality control functions of the service.
c. He/she will be a highly visible Supervisory Technologist responsible for one-on-one instructional function to achieve excellence in image productivity prior to diagnostic interpretation by staff and resident radiologists and physicians.
d. He/she serves as a radiology management representative and reports directly to management on the technological operations of the service if so, directed by the Chief Technologist and is designated alternate during periods of the Chief Tech's absence.
e. The incumbent is responsible for the overall supervision of the professional technological staff of the Service that encompasses a diversified field of technologist performing separate and distinct radiology procedures using a variety of acceptable skills and techniques.
f. The incumbent establishes and implements policies and procedures for the technological services with Diagnostics Service.
g. The incumbent assures conformity by the technical staff with departmental and medical center policies.
h. Develops strategic short-and long-term goals and objectives for the Service in collaboration with the Chief Technologist and Administrative Officer.
i. The position is responsible for the formal performance and competency evaluations of personnel in multiple radiology sections. He/she acts as the final stage reviewer for annual performance appraisal of the technical and clerical staff assigned to him/her.
j. The incumbent is tasked the responsibility of preparing a formal plan for the continuing educational needs of the Service. He/she plays a key role in the development of educational programs to meet the standards of various accrediting and regulatory groups.
k. The position is responsible for administering activities as they relate to an active quality control program. He/she establishes internal guidelines and criteria, which promote optimum image quality, reduce over exposure to the patient, reduce waste, and enhance patient care with the result being a technically satisfactory study.
l. The incumbent is responsible for the radiation monitoring in accordance with NRC standards. Acts as the liaison with the Radiation Safety Office for collection and distribution of all radiation badges. Reporting all irregularities to the Chief, Diagnostics Service, or his designated alternate.
m. The incumbent coordinates the acquisition of supplies and services with the Chief Tech always implementing cost effective purchasing methods.
n. Coordinates equipment purchases and equipment turn-ins with the Administrative Officer. Researches replacement needs and recommends procurement for "state-of-the-art" radiology equipment. Prepares and assists in preparation appropriate equipment justification and prioritization of requests.
o. The incumbent shall assist in layout in reconstruction/renovation projects with the Chief, Diagnostics, Administrative Officer, and Chief Technologist.
p. The incumbent fosters good public relations and affiliated medical school, allied health schools, and other institutions.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00pm, rotational evenings, weekends, and holidays
Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.]
Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] [NOTE: Assignment to the clinical program director requires meeting JRCERT minimum educational standards as noted in the assignment description.]
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: [Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist], GS-10 (1) Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. (2) Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments:
Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. [The technologist] functions as a supervisor for a group of DRTs at the GS-9 level and below which may include support staff. [The technologist] evaluates new products and equipment, making recommendations to supervisor concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations. [The technologist] informs higher level management of anticipated staffing variances and informally recommends promotions, reassignments, or other personnel changes such as retention or release of probationary employees, and recognition of superior performance in the diagnostic radiologic area. [The technologist] directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff. Experience must demonstrate practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): i. *Ability to analyze organizational, technical, and administrative problems and to develop and implement solutions that result in efficient section operation. ii. Ability to evaluate quality management procedures and processes. iii. *Ability to analyze and use data effectively to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity. iv. *Skill in developing new policies and guidelines as needed. v. Skill in problem solving and conflict resolution.
