Duties

You will provide industrial hygiene expertise, IH surveys, and investigations to identify, evaluate and control conditions or hazards that may cause occupational illness, injury, or otherwise affect the well-being of Shipyard employees. You will implement engineering technical expertise to the Shipyard to identify, evaluate and control conditions or hazards that may cause occupational illness, injury, or otherwise affect the well-being of Shipyard employees. You will provide atmospheric testing for flammable, toxic and oxygen-deficient or enriched atmospheres in confined, enclosed, or poorly ventilated spaces. You will conduct workplace monitoring, bulk sampling and analysis, and IH investigation of illnesses, asbestos surveys and oversight of OSH program elements, and maintain proficiency in asbestos fiber counting and bulk analysis.

  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required. bargaining unit position.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements (see Education section), in order to qualify for the INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST, GS-0690-12 position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: * Experience utilizing industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices applicable to the full range of occupational health concerned with repair/overhaul of ships and other related industrial activities. * Experience recognizing and evaluating health hazards to incorporate adequate health hazard controls into work procedures for work that impacts on the health and efficiency of employees. * Experience providing the full range of duties and serving as subject matter expert for the implementation of Industrial Hygiene programs practices. * Experience administering occupational safety and health programs and maintaining qualifications in the performance of industrial hygiene duties such as lead and asbestos bulk sampling. In addition to the Basic Requirements (see Education section), in order to qualify for the INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST, GS-0690-11 position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: * Experience providing industrial hygiene administrative and work practice and controls applicable to industrial activities. * Experience upholding industrial hygiene principles and practices applicable to full range of occupational health in industrial activities. * Experience performing lead and asbestos bulk sampling. * Experience evaluating occupational and safety health program effectiveness. In addition to the Basic Requirements (see Education section), in order to qualify for the INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST, GS-0690-09 position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: * Experience providing assistance with industrial hygiene administrative and work practice controls applicable to industrial activities; and * Experience demonstrating industrial hygiene principles and practices applicable to occupational health in industrial activities. * Experience conducting workplace monitoring, bulk sampling, and analysis as part of the industrial hygiene walk through surveys. Education

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

All applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual.
  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
  • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).
**Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.

Evaluation of Education

All science or engineering courses offered in fulfillment of the above requirements must be acceptable for credit toward the completion of a standard 4-year professional curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in science or engineering at an accredited college or university. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) as a professional engineering curriculum.

Evaluation of Experience

Qualifying experience involves the recognition, evaluation, corrective actions, and elimination of environmental conditions in the workplace that causes sickness, impaired health, or illness. This experience must demonstrate a professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of industrial hygiene and closely related sciences such as physics and engineering controls. Such work must have involved experience in all of the following areas: the acquisition of quantitative and qualitative data, and the measurement of exposures for a variety of chemical, physical, and biological stresses; the analysis of the data acquired and the prediction of probable effects of exposures on the health and well-being of workers; and the selection and recommendation of appropriate controls, including management, medical, engineering, education or training, and personal protective equipment.
