The primary purpose of this position is to as Teen Program Coordinator at an Air Force (AF) installation with responsibility for oversight of a diverse range of educational, recreational, fitness, and leisure programs aimed at promoting and enhancing the physical, social, and emotional development of teens ages 13 through 18.

Duties

Plans, organizes, coordinates, and implements a developmentally appropriate and diverse, educational recreational, fitness and leisure year-round teen program that promotes physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development and fosters achievement, leadership, and recognition of teenage youth. Monitors day-to-day operations of the Teen Program. Evaluates the effectiveness of on-going teen programs, services and activities, and makes recommendations to the Youth Program Director on policy and procedural changes to effect continual improvements wherever possible. Administers Teen Program resources. Provides input to the director in the formulation of operating instructions to protect resources from loss, theft, and maltreatment. Monitors monthly expenditures with regard to budgeted goals. Provides a safe and healthy environment for teens and staff. Conducts regular safety, fire, health, and other required inspections to endure a safe, healthy, and comfortable environment exists in the areas used to facilitate teen programs. Assists in developing marketing strategies to promote and publicize the Teen Program and increase awareness and participation. Attends meetings of interested groups soliciting ideas for current and future programs.

  • The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license may be required for the position; e.g., regularly drive passengers on tours or field trips
  • May be subject to physical examination and immunizations IAW governing AFI’s and local policy requirements
  • Posn is a childcare/youth services position and is subject to background checks in accordance with AFI 34-144
  • Posn requires sitting on the floor, walking, standing, bending, lifting, reaching above shoulders, carrying children up to 45 lbs./emergency evacuation
  • Requires some physical exertion in handling tools, materials, and equipment, and organizing the physical environment

Qualifications

Experience requirements are described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Administrative and Management Positions. BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: EDUCATION Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- general recreation, or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education. OR EXPERIENCE General Experience: Experience that provided a knowledge of the goals, principles, methods, and techniques of recreation, and an understanding of the interests of individuals or groups. Specialized Experience: Applicants must have or will have within 120 days of the closing of this announcement, at least 1 year (52 weeks) at the next lower grade level or equivalent to the NH-01 grade level in other pay systems and/or 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the NH-02 broadband, equivalent to the next lower grade GS-5/7/9 or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of Specialized experience is experience that provided a knowledge of planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, or evaluating community, industrial, outdoor, institutional, or other recreational programs, establishing, or evaluating a recreational curriculum for junior college or higher academic levels. Instructing in the principles and techniques of recreational program planning and management. Serving in a leadership role in the programs and activities of local, regional, and/or national recreational organizations. OR EDUCATION: GS-05/NH-02: 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Combination of experience and education. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of youth/teen development theory, methodology, policy, practices and procedures relating to physical, intellectual, social, and emotional development. Knowledge of requirements involved in the qualifications and suitability of adults to work with youth. Skill in preparing budgets, program evaluations, and facility administration; managing financial and physical resources of teen programs; and in effectively organizing and utilizing available resources within the program framework. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to implement policies, practices, and procedures in youth/teen programs and safety management. Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships and be an effective leader for other staff and volunteers. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
