Duties

You will conduct laboratory and computer based research in support of the Navy's Chemical Biological Radiological (CBR) Defense mission. You will conduct laboratory-based test and evaluation in the area of aerosol physics and CBR filtration. You will support laboratory operations to maintain high-precision test equipment and execute testing to characterize filter media performance. You will work with high-precision devices used to generate, measure, and characterize particles in the air, as well as associated generators, sensors, and software solutions. You will support the design, fabrication, and maintenance of novel laboratory toxic-gas test equipment. You will support project management tasks, develop test plans, report test results, and conduct project finance and risk tracking.

  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals).
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift
  • This position may require occasional travel.
  • You must be willing and able to work onboard ships.
  • Work is partially sedentary and requires the ability to safely and independently troubleshoot and work on ships (or other platforms) on Naval Bases and in laboratory setting.

Qualifications

FOR ND-04: In addition to basic education requirements, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower pay band, ND-03 (GS-09/11 equivalent grade level) or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional scientist, applying engineering/scientific theories, concepts, and practices to conduct and analyze laboratory or computer based research related to chemical/biochemical areas to meet mission requirements for development of Chemical, Biological, and Radiation (CBR) Defense system projects. FOR ND-03: In addition to basic education requirements, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower pay band, ND-02 (GS-05/08 equivalent grade level) or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional scientist, applying engineering/scientific theories, concepts, and practices to conduct laboratory or computer based research related to chemical/biochemical areas supporting Chemical, Biological, and Radiation (CBR) Defense systems. Education

Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:


FOR 1320:

A. Successful completion of a bachelor's degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR

B. Have a combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

FOR ND-03:
In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:
  • Successful completion of master's or equivalent graduate degree.
  • Successful completion of two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree.
  • Havea combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience.
