This career/career-conditional permanent full-time position is located in Shenandoah National Park, in the Division of Facilities Management, Roads and Grounds Unit. Duties

This position is duty stationed at Big Meadows maintenance Office located near mile-marker 51 on Skyline Drive. The primary purpose of this position is to supervise journeymen, intermediate and entry level Engineering Equipment Operators, Motor Vehicle Operators, Tree Workers, Arborist and Laborers in a large land management operation. Duties may include: Coordinates work with other agency work groups as the need for repairs become necessary; prioritizes the work based on the needs of the work group, staffing, resource availability and overall agency priorities. Develops annual work plans to accomplish organizational goals as set forth by the management team. Plan, coordinate and oversee cyclic, repair/rehab, and other specially funded programs related to the roads and grounds operation. Requests additional equipment and tools and recommends the update and replacement of tools, software, and equipment as necessary to maintain the changes in modern technology. Determines the equipment, personnel, and supply needs for routine and project work. Performs and supervises roads and grounds unit work that includes excavation, road maintenance, roadside mowing, snow/ice removal, etc. Administrative work includes budget work, develop work schedules, establish performance standards, performance appraisals for staff, counsel/discipline staff, train/develop/mentor staff, etc. Required to possess and maintain a valid State Commercial Driver's License Class A with no restrictions. POSITION LOCATION: Shenandoah National Park preserves and protects more than 300 square miles of nationally significant natural and cultural resources, scenic beauty, and congressionally designated wilderness within Virginia's northern Blue Ridge Mountains; and provides a broad range of opportunities for public enjoyment, recreation, inspiration, and stewardship. Within just 90 miles of Washington D.C. the Park provides visitors the ability to explore mountain peaks, hidden hollows, cascading streams, accessible wilderness, and stunning natural beauty. Approximately 40% of the Park is designated wilderness with over 500 miles of hiking trails and the iconic Skyline Drive, SHEN was established as an eastern Park that provided a "western Park experience". Due to the Park's easy accessibility to D.C and other highly populated areas along the east coast, visitation exceeds 1.4 million visitors annually which results in significant resource protection and visitor management issues and incidents.
