About the Position: Plan and manage the Regiment's safety and occupational health programs. Responsible for the Occupational Safety program for the 3D US Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard).

Duties

Technical advisor to the Regimental Commander, staff and operating officials, and subordinate units on safety and occupational health matters, such as accident prevention principles. Provide staff advice and technical assistance for assigned safety program areas requiring the development and application of new and unique facilities safety standards. Coordinate with medical officers in the survey and appraisal of conditions affecting the health and efficiency of personnel. Plan and execute accident and fire prevention programs in assigned safety areas, ensuring compliance with safety rules, standards, and regulations through staff visits and inspections. Conduct studies, make plans and develop controls for environmental health hazards such as noise, eye hazards, temperature extremes, toxic and nuisance dusts, and toxic chemicals. Plan and implement safety and occupational health programs, including program management, accident analysis, and reporting.

Basic Requirement: Undergraduate and Graduate Education with a degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), OR degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR Experience in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: managing a safety or occupational health program while applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, practices, and procedures; developing programs, policies and safety education to reduce the frequency and severity of hazardous conditions and unsafe working practices; training workers, supervisors, managers, or other safety and occupational health personnel in safety or occupational health subjects; inspecting or surveying workplaces, processes, products, or other systems for compliance with established safety and occupational health policies or standards and to identify potential new hazards. In addition to the above, you must meet the following requirements: Required Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes managing a safety and/or occupational health program; working with high level managers to help reduce employee injuries and illnesses; and developing goals for safety and/or occupational health programs or similar organizations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Oral CommunicationPublic Safety and SecuritySafety and HealthWritten Communication Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
