You will serve as a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic in the Public Works Department of NAVFAC ENGINEERING CMD MID-ATLANTIC.

Duties

You will disassemble, inspect, repair, or replace diesel or gasoline engines and parts (e.g., injection valves, cylinder, heads, cylinder sleeves, pistons, rings, connecting rods, bearings, gaskets, crankshafts) during maintenance. You will disassemble, inspect, assemble large/complex engines (e.g., up to 16 cylinders and 2000 hp). You will repair and overhaul transmissions, gear type, automatic and manual transmissions with braking, steering and differential systems mechanically integrated. You will apply extensive knowledge of the principles behind the operation of heavy mobile equipment to determine reasons for defects or problems in the absence of technical guidelines. You will conduct tests using diagnostic equipment, including computer-controlled test equipment, to identify problems which are difficult to locate and repair. You will alter, improvise, or modify to make items work properly and/or improve performance. You will operate all equipment and/or vehicles maintained, repaired, overhauled or modified, when work is completed.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require shift work.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current Class B Commercial Driver's License with P (passenger), N (tank), and T (trailer) endorsements.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION.
