This position is located in the Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program of the Conservation and Recreation Assistance Division, Interior Region 1.
Duties
As an Historian, GS-0170-11 with the National Park Service (NPS), your duties will include, but are not limited to:
Serves as an advisor on cultural resources, particularly history.
Coordinates historical and other cultural resources strategies and programs with activities on adjacent lands for the purposes of achieving broad protection strategies and minimizing human impacts.
Determines research needs and coordinates efforts toward obtaining needed research through various programs, grants, and contracts.
Reviews historical research project proposals, scopes of work, and task directives prepared for planning and other management purposes, including resources management plans.
Assembles and acquaints colleagues with recent historical scholarship related to a project's resources and themes.
Organizes and implements public history workshops, meetings and events, and develops tools to facilitate diverse and meaningful participation in agency and community projects.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/26/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
In order to qualify for this position, you must meet one of the following basic requirements:
An undergraduate or graduate degree in History.
OR
An undergraduate or graduate degree in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in History.
OR
A combination of education and experience which includes courses equivalent to a major in History, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in History.
In addition to meeting one of the above requirements, you must also possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level (obtained in either the public or private sectors) reviewing, analyzing, evaluating projects, studies and planning initiatives related to history and cultural resource management which includes: working as a team member to support a variety of planning projects and studies, serving as an advisor to program management on cultural resources and history projects and studies, assisting with collection and organization of data and information.
OR
Possess 3 years of higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in History or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience.
For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.
Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience.
For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
To qualify based on education, you must possess: 3 years of higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in History or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.
You must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using
education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
