About the Position: The incumbent serves as Power Plant Senior Electrician with the responsibility for planning, organizing, directing and participating in the installation, modification, maintenance and repairs of all electrical equipment at a hydroelectric power project which consist of a powerhouse, dam or dams, switchyards and related works.

Duties

Operate various shop equipment such as, drill press, bench grinders, hydraulic press, saw, and various air or electrical portable tools such as, grinders, impact wrench, solder gun and brasing torch to rework or build new parts. Maintain, adjust, check, or repair electrical features of generators/motors, pump/turbines; governors; overhead or gantry cranes; power transformers and other power project equipment. Skill in the use of test equipment such as: oscillators, meggers, phase sticks, phase rotation meters, digital test equipment, and cable locating and fault finding equipment. Knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code and of types and sizes of wires/cables, conduits, transformers, and other electrical equipment and circuit elements. Inspect and test electrical equipment to insure that the preventative and operating maintenance program meets established standards. Clean, adjust, and repair electrical equipment. Read commonly used drawings and diagrams of distribution networks and equipment interconnections. Utilize test instruments such as ammeters, volt meters meggers, oil testers and analyzers. Use common electrical test devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, meggers, and continuity checkers to perform basic checks for continuity, resistance, voltage, opens, shorts, insulation breakdowns, and grounds; Troubleshoot distribution circuits and generating and controlling equipment to locate and correct the causes of outages and improper operation. Skill to plan and carry through the troubleshooting and repair of high voltage generating, controlling, and distribution systems.

  • Position requires the incumbent to use appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to an one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

I can organize and participate in the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of electrical power control equipment, distribution lines, or electric-generating equipment at hydroelectric power plant, steam generating plant , nuclear plant , or commercial heavy industrial plant. In addition, I have the ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain power distribution circuits, control systems, communication systems, and high voltage heavy duty generating and distribution systems. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Operates insulating oil purifiers and pumps. Under certain conditions where switching is required incumbent may perform switching in order to put into effect or remove a clearance. Working Conditions: Work is primarily inside, and subject to electrical hazard when working around high voltage equipment. Work such as in the switchyard, is outside and subject to weather conditions. Sometimes incumbent works in damp, cramped quarters and is subject to constant noise from continuous operating machinery. Occasionally incumbent climbs and works from ladders and scaffolds.
