The Associate Chief of Staff (ACOS), Dental Service will have both clinical and administrative roles in the Aleda E. Lutz Veteran Affairs (VA) Medical Center (MC). As service lead, ACOS, Dental Service is responsible for Dental Service. The ACOS, Dental Service will also function as a general dentist. They will be responsible for the overall dental care of patients, to include consultative services in both the inpatient and outpatient settings at the Aleda E. Lutz VAMC.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to: Administrative (80%): Assume the responsibility for overall management of Dental Service. This includes the organization of the administrative, day-to-day activities. Provide leadership and accountability for all aspects of the service, assuring support of the mission and values of this medical center and VlSN 10. Assume responsibility for carrying out the goals, objectives, plans and policies established by the Medical Center Director. Ensure the service functions as an integrated care-delivery system, providing a full continuum of patient-focused dental services for eligible Veterans. This includes review and approval of staff treatment plans and scopes of care for Veteran beneficiaries. Coordinate and integrate the interdepartmental functioning of the service. This includes chairing relevant meetings. Clinical (20%): Works under the general direction of the Chief of Staff. The ACOS, Dental Service independently examines, diagnoses, and treats the commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems, requiring opinion or intervention, in the outpatient and inpatient settings, including emergent evaluations. Acts as the consultant for patients referred to them for input regarding dental opinions or interventions. Occasionally, they independently treat patients having dental health problems of greater than usual difficulty. In the bulk of cases of unusual dental health problems encountered, they either consult with another VA dentist or refer the case for treatment. The staff general dentist consults with VA physicians when there is a medical as well as dental problem involved as may be appropriate for the patient conditions that present. Their work is reviewed in terms of the overall efficiency and adequacy of the dental services they render. Dentist Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~ Residency Training: Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~ Licensure: Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. English Language Proficiency: Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7402(d) and 7407(d). Grade Determinations: Dentist (Chief of Dental Service) GS-15 Service Chief/Service Line Manager/Lead Dentist. In addition to the above, Dentists in these roles must demonstrate effectiveness coordinating and managing interdisciplinary collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders to optimize the care of patients under their purview. It is expected individuals in these roles serve on a full-time basis. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-3 Dentist Qualification Standard. Physical Requirements: Reaching: This position requires frequent extension of the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction including above or below shoulder level, including retrieval of needed equipment and supplies. Standing: This position frequently requires the maintenance of an upright position to perform duties such as those associated with patient care. Walking: This position requires frequent moving about on foot to accomplish tasks. Lifting: This position requires occasional raising of objects from a lower position to a higher position or the movement of objects horizontally position to position. Lifting may be done in the movement of equipment or supplies. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 25 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Fingering/Hands: This position requires constant writing or otherwise working with fingers and hands, including one or both hands to include duties such as entering information into the computer, etc. Talking: This position requires constant expression of ideas by means of the spoken word, including the provision of information to internal and external contacts and the sharing of information with co-workers. Hearing: This position requires constant perception of sounds at normal range, including the reception of oral communication both in person and over the phone. Repetitive Motions: This position requires constant substantial movements (motion) of the wrists, hands, or fingers, as is done when entering information into the computer.
