The Chief of Podiatry is the clinical expert for all podiatric services for the Iowa City VA Health Care System. They supervise Podiatrists and APPs (Advance Practice Professional) within the Iowa City VA and the CBOCs (Community Based Outpatient Clinics). They serve as the facility PAVE (Prevention of Amputations of Veterans Everywhere) Coordinator.

Duties

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Ensuring all Veterans receive high quality, efficient, timely, and appropriate care with the highest professional and ethical standards and quality of care. Ensuring the highest level of performance by medical staff members through appropriate delineation of clinical privileges, ongoing performance evaluations, orientation, and use of continuous quality improvement practices. Completing performance evaluations of Staff Podiatrists and APPs within the Podiatry Service. Serve as Chief of Podiatry responsible for the supervisory, managerial, administrative output for the service unit podiatry division. Perform diagnostic test and interpret results, conduce examinations, make diagnosis, provide podiatric medical and surgical procedures. Prescribe medication, adjust dosage or frequency. Provide technical training, instructions, job techniques to subordinate staff, plan and assign work assignments, work schedules, improve workflow, and increase productivity. Apply a wide range of professional theories, assessment methods and techniques to care for ill patients and those with Podiatric medical and surgical problems. Develop coherent treatment strategies. Incorporate new clinical procedures. Provide professional advice and consultation in care areas related to treatment of podiatric conditions. Effectively supervise and manage professional staff, especially students and residents (if applicable). Correctly assess qualifications and abilities of current and prospective employees. Interpersonal relationships, including conflict resolution and the ability to work collaboratively with other physicians and providers from a wide array of clinical services, specialties and departments. Work effectively with individuals or groups representing. Diagnose and treat medical and surgical disorders using the most appropriate techniques in providing quality care. Responsible for initial evaluation and overall workup, history and physicals, and admission of podiatric patients as needed. Clinical duties include but are not limited to Operating Room (experience in wide variety of standard podiatric surgical procedures and operations), in-patient rounds, Emergency Room and Outpatient Clinics. The staff podiatrist will be able to perform a wide variety of podiatric surgical procedures. May also supervise students and residents who rotate through the podiatry service. Participate in all surgical quality/performance improvement initiatives as appropriate. Responsible for providing patients with education concerning their disease state and treatment regimen. Assess Veterans' risks and benefits associated with surgical procedures and will provide appropriate informed consent, so Veterans fully understand the important risks and benefits of surgical intervention. Complete all electronic, clinical, daily charting and documentation required by the Medical Center in a timely manner as appropriate, including outcomes reporting as appropriate. Consult with Medical Center staff on many patient- care issues. Enforces a policy of full disclosure. If there is a complication in the course of a patient's care, the staff podiatrist will discuss the untoward event, including the patient's options for second medical opinion or legal action, and will document these discussions in the chart (CPRS). Work effectively with patients and co-workers and will treat other health care professionals and patients' families with respect and dignity. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Podiatrist Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. Licensure or Registration: Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~ English Language Proficiency: Podiatrists appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7402(d), 7407(d).
