About the Position: Serves as a Public Affairs Specialist for the National Museum of the United States Army. Assists with the development and dissemination of public affairs plans and strategic communications for promotion of the National Museum; coordinating response to local, national, and international media queries. NOTE: Please read in detail the information within the Additional Information section that explains Army procedures for time-limited assignments.

Duties

Assist in determining and carrying out the objectives of the public affairs programs. Develop public affairs plans for specific issues or projects, addressing the needs of the target audience, most appropriate communication techniques, and recommended approaches. Evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the internal information, news media relations and community relations programs in achieving greater understanding of the Army's mission and programs. Serves as a Museum point-of-contact with the Office of Public Affairs, provides public affairs counsel. Coordinates and oversees development, staffing and release of materials to support approved media plans, strategies, and Museum events of national and/or international interest. Maintains close day-to-day liaison with senior Staff points of contact for assigned subject matter areas. Ensures that programs provide a comprehensive view of museum functions.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The work requires frequent variations in duty hours, including evening work, weekend work, and holiday work when serving at protocol functions.
  • This position requires that the employee occasionally travel away from the normal duty station up to 10% of the time.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes developing and disseminating informational material to the general public or specialized target groups via news releases, speeches, brochures, and/or electronic media; writing and editing public and informational papers; and establishing and maintaining working relationships with media outlets. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Communications and MediaOrganizational AwarenessPlanning and Evaluating Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11). To be referred, applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade and qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing of the announcement.
