This position is located within Facilities Management Services at the VA Western North Carolina VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC.
Duties
is position is a grounds leader, performing work, which provides leadership in accomplishing a variety of grounds keeping tasks, which requires mainly physical abilities and effort under general supervision. Performs a full range of grounds keeping duties in all areas of the Medical Center. Work regularly includes assignment to first shift but could include assignment to second, third or rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.
The incumbent is responsible for operating farm-type tractors, trucks, and mowers with snow removal attachments, such as scrape blades, blowers, sand and ice melt spreaders for snow removal.
Ensures the efficient operation and maintenance of approximately 68 acres of lawn, roads and parking lots.
Loading, hauling and unloading materials and supplies such as furniture, laundry, linen, air conditioners, supplies used for the medical center and equipment and machinery used in maintaining the grounds.
Passing on to other workers the instructions received from supervisors and getting work started, e.g., by assign1ng the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led; following up and inspecting work assignments preformed
Working along with other workers and setting the pace; leading by example
Demonstrating proper work methods;
Assuring that needed plans, standard operating procedures, materials, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations;
Obtaining needed information or decisions. from supervisors to solve problems that come up during the work;
Assuring that there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy;
Checking work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met;
Urging or advising other workers to follow instructions received from supervisors, and to meet deadlines;
Assuring that ·safety and housekeeping rules are followed (for example, assuring that limits of safe machine operation are not exceeded and that all tools are _used properly);
Reporting to supervisors on status and progress of work, and causes of work delays; and
Answering questions of supervisors on overall work operations and problems (for example, concerning, additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees).

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent must be able to perform labor such as digging or shoveling for extended periods of time; be able to lift weights up to 100 pounds and to operate machinery controls with required arm and leg coordination. Incumbent must work in all outside conditions incurred such as heat, cold, snow, dust, and rain. Incumbent will also be required to work under conditions found in demolition such as dust, confined spaces and in debris areas. Incumbent will be subject to working around operating machinery and in areas where cuts, bruises, abrasions, and strains may occur.
