The Health Technician serves as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team. He/she engages in nursing care which requires the knowledge and skills as represented by certified nursing assistant standards. The Health-Technician maintains acceptable standards of practice under the direction of a Registered Nurse. He or she performs assignments independently, reporting unusual, new, or abnormal findings to professional staff.
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Self directed in providing nursing care to a variety of patients/residents of ages across the adult continuum to meet personal hygiene needs such as bathing, lifting, turning and feeding; administering tube feeding via feeding pump to include changing administration sets, all the while explaining procedures to patient/and or family.
Use aseptic techniques to perform all urologic procedures.
Assume a teaching role to include, but not limited to instructing patients and their family members in the mechanism of voiding and in demonstrating the care of various appliances and catheters.
Assist and instructs veterans on how to keep lungs clear and the use of adaptive equipment.
Make observations and enters information about the patient's condition based on initial and ongoing observations.
Participate in nursing care interventions that are consistent with a plan of care.
Measure vital signs, pain scale and weights.
Perform EKG
Perform phlebotomy for tests as ordered by a physician.
Initiate heparin/saline lock and check for patency/inflammation on an every shift basis.
Perform and documents finger sticks on diabetic patients.
Instruct and assist patients with dressing and undressing in preparation for an examination.
Assists with the discharge process as needed to maintain patient flow.
Assist in carrying out the patient plan of care.
Employs effective. and appropriate communication skills relating to patients, staff and visitors, in a tone of voice that is respectful, calm, pleasant, nonjudgmental and non-threatening.

Physical Requirements: Duties require extended periods of standing and walking; working with residents requires regular and recurring bending, lifting stooping, and stretching, pulling and similar activities; frequent lifting of residents over 50 lbs; frequent exposure to contagious diseases; and rotating shifts.

Individual Occupational Requirement: This position's duties range widely in type and include support duties to medical and health personnel. You must have technician experience which is experience that requires application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the Surgical Technician position to be filled.
In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirement, you may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Preferred Experience:
One year of Medical-Surgical experience.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.
