Employee will serve as a Utility Systems Repairer-Operator (USRO) assigned to the Facilities Management Energy Center located at the Veterans Healthcare System in Ann Arbor, MI.

Duties

Employee will be responsible for the maintenance, repair and safe operation of the Boiler Plant and Cooling Plant. Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following: Performs all safety checks necessary to start-up a cold plant and those required on a hot plant. Tests and analyzes the boiler and cooling water and make corrections to the boiler and cooling systems; inspects operating machinery, recognizes potential problems and takes corrective action. Reads and analyzes information from gauges, meters, recorders, analog displays and computer-generated data to determine operational status and make/recommend adjustments. Applies knowledge about pollution control monitoring devices, manual/automatic microprocessor and computerized controls related to power boilers and centrifugal chillers. Applies skill and comprehensive knowledge of all operational phases of the Energy Center, to include but not limited to fuel systems, water treatment, steam generation and pollution controls and how they interact for the safe, economical, and efficient generation of high-pressure steam and chilled water. Monitors the energy management system and fire alarm system and properly responds to alarms, messages, etc. Maintains cleanliness of the Energy Center and areas. Performs other duties, as necessary. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Required to frequently work in confined areas in and around boilers, chillers, and support equipment (i.e., auxiliary and pollution control equipment). The work requires moderate to strenuous effort and long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending, and crouching. Workers frequently lift and carry boiler parts and chemical supplies withing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally over 40 pounds with assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment. Works indoors and occasionally outside for short periods where may be subjected to prevailing weather conditions. Employee is subjected to high temperatures, constant noise, rotating machinery, soot, dirt, grease, chemicals, oil, and fumes in the work area. Required to know and practice sound safety measures. Requires experience applying skill utilizing the principles and theories pertaining to combustion, heat transfer, and steam generation in a boiler plant; working with computerized or microprocessor control systems, fuel handling, fuel firing mechanisms, feedwater, and boiler water treatment systems; performing maintenance procedures and making necessary repairs; and reading and analyzing information from gauges, meters, recorders, analog displays, and computer-generated data to determine the operational status of the Boiler and Chiller plants.
