Duties

You will control and coordinate the operations of all utilities, generating plant, sub-stations, and emergency diesel generators, monitors utility electric feed to station, reverse osmosis systems and seven steam nodal plants. You will perform operational maintenance on mechanical equipment, and may perform more extensive repairs during slack period, scheduled shut down or in emergencies. You will check utility systems distribution patterns by reviewing load demand records, examining dispatch of utilities orders, observing conditions reflected on control computers. You will maintain utility service to all vital production, research and quality assurance areas to prevent loss of production, vital testing, fires and or explosions. You will operate high-pressure boilers in emergencies and when assigned, including operating manual and semi-automatic controls for oil burners and gas, blows down boilers. You will maintain constant observation of the control room Control System for condition of equipment, keeping watch logs, maintaining hourly readings, and answering telephone calls from outlying building. You will perform operational and preventive maintenance on turbines and other mechanical equipment. You will make preliminary diagnosis of trouble symptoms, recommending action to correct or shut down equipment.

Requirements

  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current MD Industrial Wastewater Class I license.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current MD Stationary Engineers Class I license.

Qualifications

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Maintaining utility service (steam, electricity, compressed air and water/wastewater treatment) to all vital production, research and quality assurance areas to prevent loss of production, vital testing, fires and/or explosions; 2) Making preliminary diagnosis of trouble symptoms to recommend action (e.g. correct issues, shut down equipment) to the power plant supervisor; 3) Conducting checks of equipment (generators, boilers, air compressors, electrical distribution systems) by reviewing load demand records, examining dispatch of utilities orders, and observing conditions reflected on control computers; 4) Performing extensive repairs during slack periods and scheduled shut downs to avoid mechanical malfunctions.
