Position is located at Pine Ridge Service Unit, in Pine Ridge SD. The purpose of the position is to provide planned educational experience with emphasis on diabetes, as an integral part of patient care. Through patient education the patient and family will assisted in acquiring the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to accomplish diabetes self-management of their health and wellness. Educational planning will be initiated upon provider referral or entry into active DM patient registry.

Knowledge of the teaching-learning process including assessment of educational needs, establishing learning goals, learning objectives, and outcomes, adapting teaching and instructional materials to the varying needs and abilities of the patients, evaluation what the patient has learned and documenting the process. Participates in the diabetes program with multidisciplinary team to assess and provide culturally relevant care for patients living with diabetes.
Ensures that all patient nursing care needs are based on a patient assessment that addresses the needs of the patients. Provides direct patient education, including guidance and counseling to individual patients on diet programs, treatment regimes, self-management skills, and measures designed to prevent diabetes and the complications of diabetes.
Participates in the planning, implementation, coordination and evaluation of nursing and personnel educational activities that directly and indirectly affect diabetic patient care outcomes. Compiles data and analyzes trends related to diabetic care. Participates in the analysis and interpretation of collected data by relating results of knowledge of diabetes and health care delivery systems which might cause or explain any variations.
Provides direct patient education, including guidance and counseling to individual patients on diet programs, treatment regimes, self-management skills, and measures designed to prevent diabetes and the complications of diabetes. Provides in-services, clinical experiences and technical assistance and guidance in planning, implementing, and evaluating continuing diabetic education programs for nursing and medical personnel.
Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Nurse Series 0610 (opm.gov)
Education
A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education(external link), Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs(external link), Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education(external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (external link) is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
Licensure
For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination(external link). In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Basic Requirements for the GS-11 (or equivalent) Grade Level
In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; or
At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program.
In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Identifying patients' needs and assisting the patient and the patient's family in establishing treatment goals; Writing updates and revising care plans for patients in collaboration with other teams members; Participating in the diabetes program with multidisciplinary team to assess and provide culturally relevant care for patients living with diabetes; Providing technical assistance with guidance in planning, implementing and evaluation of continuing education training programs on a continuous basis; Participating in interim and annual comprehensive diabetes audit.
Time In Grade (Merit Promotion Candidates Only)
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
