The Veterans Affairs Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS) has 1 vacancy for RN, Assistant Nurse Manager for 1-West, a 20-bed Medical/Surgical Unit. The Assistant Nurse Manager is administratively and clinically accountable to the Nurse Manager of the designated unit.

Duties

The Assistant Nurse Manager serves as an assistant with line authority to the unit nurse manager in providing leadership and direction to nursing staff. He/she is accountable for adhering to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice; demonstrating leadership in improving nursing care; and the administration, management, supervision and evaluation of both nursing care and nursing personnel on his/her designated unit and as assigned for the Medical Center. Demonstrates, promotes, creates and ensures a culturally diverse workforce in which the values and needs of all individuals are respected. Assistant Nurse Manager provides an environment that fosters employees to perform to their full individual potential. The role responsibilities include but are not limited to: direct caregiver, care coordinator, educator, advocate, and consultant. Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities and preparing schedules for completion of work. Assigns work to assigned personnel based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and the requirements of the assignments, and the capabilities of assigned personnel. Evaluates the performance of assigned personnel. Makes recommendations for appointments, advancements or reassignments of assigned personnel. Gives advice, counsel, or instruction to assigned personnel on work and administrative matters. Hears and resolves complaints of assigned personnel and referring more serious complaints not resolved to higher level supervisors. Recommends disciplinary action where appropriate. Identifies developmental and training needs of assigned personnel and providing or making provision for such development and training. Responsible for performance improvement, customer service/patient satisfaction, patient and employee safety, interviewing applicants. employee relations, standards of care and practice, the work environment, and accreditation and regulatory standards. Works in partnership with the union and adheres to Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) principles. Develops and manages collaborative partnerships with physicians and other clinicians. Cross-covers Nurse Manager will be designated to handle administrative and clinical issues, such as staffing coverage, granting leave, and patient and/or staff issues. Work Schedule: 24/7 hospital operations, tours vary, including weekends and holidays. Service will determines Tour of Duty to meet the needs of the unit/patients. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. RN Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: 3-5 years of successful nursing practice and progressive leadership experience with current experience in designated specialty. Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) with a minimum of five years of experience OR Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with a minimum of three years of experience. National Certification in Specialty. Knowledge of labor management relationship program, EEO, Human Resources standards, Retention and Recruitment standards, budgetary/internal control system, and Performance Improvement/Quality Assurance initiatives. Potential to exhibit leadership/managerial skills in facilitating collaboration of service/ departments and integrated units in the planning and provision of care for diverse groups of patients. Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication with recent the ability to work with the Medical Center executive leadership team and other health disciplines. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Involves considerable amount of standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and turning. Requires carrying or lifting of objects weighing up to 50 lbs., but occasionally may require work that involves pushing or lifting in excess of 50 pounds and going up and down flights of stairs. The position requires visual and auditory acuity at a level to provide safe and effective nursing care.
