You will serve as a PHYSICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN in the HEALTH PHYSICS BRANCH, RADIATION HEALTH DIVISION, RADIOLOGICAL CONTROLS OFFICE of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will report to the Dosimetry Operations Supervisor in the Health Physics Branch, who provides guidance for execution of dosimetry policy and program operational objectives. You will handling radioactive material and sources, which require special handling procedures. You will relay information to the worker concerning radiation health policies and procedures on exposure control issues and of internal monitoring. You will produce radiation exposure records and reports whose authenticity and accuracy are unquestionable.

• You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
• This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

GS-06 GS-1311-06 Minimum Qualifications - Must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Experience performing assigned duties including issuing, processing, and maintaining dosimetry devices and investigating their discrepancies. Experience with the Automated Radiological Controls Management Information System to input and generate data. Experience acting as a liaison between on and offsite personnel to resolve radiation exposure and/or records conflicts. Experience monitoring personnel for internal deposition of radioactivity. Experience interpreting and understanding radiation health practices and requirements contained in Federal, NAVSEA, BUMED, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Shipyard and Corporate procedures, guidelines, and technical manuals as it pertains to the dosimetry program and use of equipment. GS-05 GS-1311-05 Minimum Qualifications - Must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Experience performing assigned duties including issuing, processing, and maintaining dosimetry devices and investigating their discrepancies. Experience inputting information into and generate reports from the Automated Radiological Controls Management Information System. Experience acting as a liaison between on and offsite personnel to resolve conflicts. Experience monitoring personnel for internal deposition of radioactivity. Experience attaining an understanding of radiation health practices and requirements contained in Federal, NAVSEA, BUMED, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Shipyard and Corporate procedures, guidelines, and technical manuals. Education

In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify for the position with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

For GS-06:

Successful completion of one-half year (9 semester hours) of directly related graduate-level education leading to a Master's degree from an accredited college or university.

For GS-05:
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of physical science, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics.
