Duties

This position is for a 3 day/week (24 hours/wk), outpatient Palliative Care NP. The NP will independently evaluate and manage patients with serious illness on all three VA Boston Campuses, with the majority of clinics based at the Brockton Campus. The NP Palliative care position is accountable for the management and evaluation of patients under her/his care. She/he holds a scope of practice in collaboration with a physician. This position reports to the Section Chief of Palliative Care in Medical Service. The NP sees patients independently and is supported by a full time clinical palliative care RN and MD clinical director as well as a part time social worker and pharmacist. VA Boston Healthcare System serves as a tertiary care center for New England Veterans and hosts nursing, pharmacy, medical, psychology and other learners from all the Boston area teaching hospitals and universities. The Section of Palliative Care includes an active inpatient consultation service with MD fellow learners, a 15-bed hospice and palliative care unit with MD, psychology, pharmacy and NP learners, and a growing outpatient team with daily clinic availability through a combination of free standing and embedded clinic models. We are a collaborative, flexible, patient and staff-centered, interdisciplinary team and work closely with all hospital specialties and disciplines. The incumbent is prepared by advanced practice in adult health care across the health continuum with specialty focus hospice and palliative care. The practice includes independent and interdependent decision making, and direct accountability for clinical judgment. Graduate preparation expands the comprehensiveness of the NPs role, which includes: participating in and use of research, and development and implementation of health policy, leadership, education, case management, and consultation. Duties include, but are not limited to: Work closely with the Director of Outpatient Palliative Care and the Outpatient Palliative Care RN Clinic Coordinator to provide access to outpatient palliative care for all eligible and enrolled veterans. Ensure high quality practices in the treatment of symptoms at the end of life through the coordination and integration of various nursing, medical and complementary interventions. Coordinate of the efforts of the multiple disciplines involved in caring for patients at the of life in the Palliative Care Unit, the Acute Palliative Care Consult Team, and the Outpatient Palliative Care Clinic. Serve as a consultant and resource person. Serve as a liaison to community hospice. Notifications: This position is an NAGE Bargaining Unit position. In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held. This position is in the Excepted Service. Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) Basic Requirements English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Education: A post-master's certificate or master's or doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner. (Applicants pending the completion of educational requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until the education requirements are met.) Must be a graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). NOTE: Foreign Education. Graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing programs, the nurse practitioner degree equivalency must be validated through an Agency recognized degree equivalency evaluation agency, such as the International Consultants of Delaware (ICD). Candidates with equivalent nurse practitioner masters or doctorate level degrees who possess current, full, active, and unrestricted registration and certification will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant appointment. License and Certification: License. All APN (NPs) must possess and maintain an active, current, full, and unrestricted APN license to practice as an NP in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Basic Certification. All APN (NPs) must maintain full and current board certification in an area of clinical specialty from one of the following: the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB), or other nationally recognized certifying body in the area in which the Nurse Practitioner is academically prepared. Accepted Specialty certifications for this position are: Family NP, Adult NP, Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. NOTE: Grandfathering Provision - All persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series and an APN (NP) assignment that are also performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification. The following Scope, Education and Experience, and Dimension criteria must be met to qualify for Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) II: Exception to Licensure for Graduate Nurse Technicians. Candidates who otherwise meet the basic requirements, but do not possess the required licensure and/or certification, may be appointed at the entry step of the Nurse II, as a Graduate Nurse Technician - Nurse Practitioner on a temporary appointment up to any period not-to-exceed one year and a day under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 405(c)(2)(B).
