This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Location Support Staff Unit in Mississippi State, MS.
In this position, you will plan, organize, administer, and evaluate the location's safety programs.
Duties
Conduct independent inspections of offices and laboratories to assess what actions need to be taken to avoid accidents and injuries.
Prepare and maintain accurate documentation of all safety-related matters to assure compliance with State and Federal regulations.
Develop and implement compliance programs for disposal of hazardous waste, chemicals, and bio-hazardous wastes.
Analyze employee's occupational exposures and risks to identify and arrange for appropriate medical exams and clinical tests.
Requirements
- You must be a US Citizen or US National.
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.

- Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
Time-in-grade restrictions apply for all candidates considered under merit promotion procedures and must be met by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of this vacancy announcement.
GS-11:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience implementing safety, health, or environmental management programs in a research facility or laboratory environment; coordinating regular inspections or maintenance of safety equipment; and maintaining accurate documentation of safety-related matters.
OR
Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related. Related degrees may include safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.
OR
A combination of doctorate education and relevant experience as described above.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
