Duties

This position serves as a Public Affairs Specialist for the Green River District. Assists with producing a wide range of creative, informative print, electronic and digital products to support the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) communication objectives. Creates and distributes informational materials and digital products to promote awareness of BLM and its mission to the public and colleagues. Researches and prepares news releases for publishing on traditional and digital media. Assists with prepping BLM employees for media interviews. Obtains and keeps up-to-date contacts of area leaders and elected officials for use in outreach. Assists with public meetings. Obtains and reports public reaction to BLM activities or information programs making recommendations to improve communication materials when necessary.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To qualify at the GS-09 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level comparable in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Public Affairs Specialist. Qualifying specialized experience includes: creating written, visual or digital communication resources including news releases or publications; orally communicating in clear, informative presentations; addressing questions from the media and targeted audiences; using various digital media platforms; and using the basic principles of photography or video. OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have a Master's or equivalent degree, or two (2) full years (36 semester hours) of graduate-level education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. Only graduate level education in excess of 18 semester hours may be combined with experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: Most of the work is performed in an office setting. Driving a car or pickup truck is periodically required. The work may require walking outdoors and travel in light aircraft, helicopters, and off-road vehicles. Long work days are occasionally required to meet deadlines and resolve specific problems. Writing and editing assignments require a degree of concentration and often include working under extremely tight deadlines with considerable outside pressure. Work Environment: Most of the work is performed in an office setting although travel to field sites or other BLM/government offices is often required. Attendance at meetings at night or on weekends is sometimes required. Incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer.
