This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: This is a military technician position with the 412th Theater Engineer Command, Headquarters Support Company, 854th Engineer Battalion, 411th Engineer Brigade located in Saugerties, New York.
Duties
Conduct safety investigations of minor/ moderate accidents and incidents.
Assist in conducting risk assessments to formulate corrective and/or preventative actions.
Analyze accident investigation reports involving operations and facilities to identify potential problems and/or trends.
Assist in performing safety awareness training.
Promote safety programs through presentations, briefings and displays.
Assist brigade safety specialist in forming recommendations for hazard abatement.
Maintain records and data of the Battalion Safety Program.
Maintain a Hazard Log to track items through the abatement process to close.

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- THIS POSITION REQUIRES ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP AS A SOLDIER IN THE U.S. ARMY RESERVE (USAR).

- This position requires you to complete 40 contact hours of Safety Professional Education/Course work each subsequent year as follow-on professional development.
- This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete the Unit Safety Officer Course within 12 months of appointment.
- This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete OSHA 510: Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry course within 12 months of appointment.
- This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete OSHA 511: Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry course within 12 months of appointment.
- This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete OSHA 3015: Excavation, Trenching and Soil Mechanics course within 12 months of appointment.
- This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete OSHA 3095: Electrical Standards course within 12 months of appointment.
- This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete OSHA 2045: Machinery and Machine Guarding Standards course within 12 months of appointment.
- This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete OSHA 2264: Permit-Required Confined Space Entry course within 12 months of appointment.
- This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete Army Mishap Investigators Course within 12 months of appointment.
- This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete CES Foundation course within 12 months of appointment.
- This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete the following courses within 24 months of appointment: OSHA 2015: Hazardous Materials; Basic Radiation Safety; OSHA 521: OSHA Guide to Industrial Hygiene.
- This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete the following courses within 24 months of appointment: Risk Management/Job Hazard Analysis; NFPA 101: Life Safety Code.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes preparing or reviewing written products; delivering oral briefings; identifying, preventing, or eliminating safety hazards in work processes or environmental conditions in areas such as: fire prevention inspector, construction, safety, engineering, radiation, transportation, or electrical safety; and/or safety training or promotion. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position, such as: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
