Duties

Serve as an Assistant Fire Chief during an assigned shift and as such is in charge of all operations and carries out any other policies or instructions of the Fire Chief. Make and/or direct fire prevention inspections of buildings and installations in the area. Provide on-the-job training in fire fighting and rescue procedures, and techniques and fire prevention and maintenance methods. Respond to emergency incidents/fires directing own crew and others through their crew chiefs. Direct fire prevention inspections of buildings and installation. Exercise day-to-day supervision over firefighters through crew chiefs.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 75 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
  • As a "Key" position, the incumbent must be exempted from recall to active duty and will receive training to ensure mission accomplishment of sustaining base operations during mobilization.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis; 24-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 120 hours per pay period.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime. This position performs, as required, mutual aid support to local fire departments.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
  • This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • You must obtain and maintain NWCG Red Card, Wildland Firefighter Type II certification within 180 days of occupying this position.
  • Special Overtime Pay Provisions apply under CFR § 551.541 - Employees engaged in fire protection activities or law enforcement activities.
  • This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Certifications: In addition to the above requirements, this position requires that the incumbent possess and maintain the following DoD IFSAC or Pro-Board issued certifications: Fire Officer III Fire Inspector II Fire Instructor IIHAZMAT Incident Commander National or State EMT License and for locations with an aircraft mission - Airport Firefighter.
