About the Position: This position is located in Bassett Army Community Hospital in Fort Wainwright, Alaska. Serves as Epidemiology Technician and uses the principles and techniques of epidemiology to assist an investigating officer in the preparation and completion of an epidemiologic investigation. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Work with assigned personnel to determine the source of any significant increase in the baseline presence of infectious diseases. Assist investigating officers in the preparation and completion of an epidemiologic investigation. Collect specimens as instructed by the investigating officer. Coordinate and communicate with appropriate public health and preventive medicine personnel from the Department of Public Health State of Alaska, and colleagues at other military installations. Perform data entry and query into DRSI (Disease Reporting System Internet) Armed Forces. Perform screening, counseling, and referral for the Tuberculosis (TB) program. Maintain appropriate interviewing area for Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) interviews and contact follow-up.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) subject to pre-employment drug test and random drug testing.
• This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations.
• This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual season influenza vaccinations in accordance with Defense Health Agency Procedural Instruction 6025.34.
• This position is identified as Mission Essential which may require you to work or remain at work during an emergency situation or when inclement weather has curtailed operations (e.g., threat to the facility, natural disaster, delayed reporting).
• This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
• Work requires lifting and moving moderate to heavy items up to 25 lbs.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Conducting or assisting with the conduction of epidemiological investigations; 2) Providing education or counseling to patients with a communicable disease; AND 3) Preparing or presenting training or information on communicable diseases to medical clinic or hospital staff, and patients. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: 9 semester hours of graduate education in subjects directly related to the position, such as Epidemiology, Public Health, Information Systems/Data Management sciences, Health Sciences, Biology, or Mathematics/Statistics. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours by 9. Add the two percentages.
