The incumbent is responsible for independently planning, developing and implementing a comprehensive environmental health program on the assigned reservations. Environmental Health Services activities are performed in accordance with Part 3, Chapter 11, Environmental Health Services, Indian Health Service Manual and other written OEH&E guidelines.
Duties
Plan, implement and evaluate a comprehensive environmental health program on assigned reservations that emphasizes safe water, solid and hazardous waste management, food protection, pool safety, healthy homes, occupational health and safety, safe childcare environments, vector control, community injury prevention, radon gas and institutional health.
Conduct comprehensive environmental health surveys of all Indian Health Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs and Tribal facilities including schools, day care centers, gaming facilities, health care, etc.
Build Tribal capacity to manage environmental health hazards in their community by assisting with the development of environmental health and occupational safety policies, procedures, regulations, employee training programs and public education materials.
Serve as a technical consultant to Tribal program managers and leaders by assisting them with environmental health hazard identification and mitigation.

Individual Occupational Requirements
Education
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Applying appropriate environmental health codes, standards and best practices when identifying risk factors for necessary mitigation; applying interpersonal skills, writing and verbal communication to teach and gain compliance with environmental health conditions; effectively evaluating and implementing environmental health control measures; planning and administering environmental health work through a risk based process OR 3 years or progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
Selective Placement Factor
In addition to the minimum requirements, the following Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) or Registered Sanitarian (RS) is determined to be essential to perform the duties and responsibilities of this particular position. Applicants who do not meet the selective placement factor are ineligible for further consideration.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
