About the Position: Serves as Museum Director, responsible for the administration, management, and direction of a Dept of Army Museum. The hiring official is filling position(s) located at Fort Riley, KS and Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA. Selectee's salary will be based on duty station assigned. The salary shown is from the Rest of US pay table, 2024.

Duties

The incumbent has authority to independently plan, manage, and administer museum activities and programs. Works independently to resolve unprecedented or highly controversial or otherwise significant matters. Develops and implements procedures and policies for successful museum operations. Ensures facilities are designed to preserve artifacts and provide a stable environment for the exhibits. Directs and coordinates the planning and development of museum education programs and lectures. Independently compiles historical research information and composes into brochures and other types of publications for distribution in the respective museum. Designated a code-4 Civil Service Reform Act (CSRA) Supervisor: meets the definition of Supervisor in 5 U.S.C. 7103(a)(10) but does not meet the minimum requirements for application of the General Schedule Supervisory Guide (25% supervisory work).

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has an irregular tour of duty and may require shift work and/or work on rotating shifts to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, and in other situations.
  • Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) is required up to 15%.
  • Lifting requirement of up to 25 lbs.
  • This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment. Employee will be required to sign DA Form 7281.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical exam.
  • Position covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. Individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.

Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field such as Museum Studies, Art History, Museum Management, Curatorial Studies, Design for Exhibition or Museums, Conservation Studies. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. OR C. Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the four year course of study as shown in A above. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1.) performing historical research on diverse artifact collections; 2.) maintaining historical records on historical/museum artifacts; 3.) performing historical display fabrication and installation ensuring historical accuracy; and 4.) performing historical artifact cataloging. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: CommunicationsHistory and ArchaeologyTechnical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11). To be referred, applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade and qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing of the announcement.
