This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain DoD Personnel to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
This position requires a duty location of both Fort Myer, VA and Fort McNair, Washington, DC.
Duties
Repair, modify, install, maintain, service, and perform preventive maintenance on air conditioning units, heating systems, and related
equipment.
Utilize working knowledge of plumbing, steam-fitting, air conditioning and refrigeration, air distribution, sheet metal, brazing, soldering
machine and electrical practices to make emergency repairs
Complete work orders, building plans, shop sketches, blueprints, and instructions.
Select tools and equipment, instruments and/or material to be used in completing assigned tasks.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation, Tier 1 investigation.
- This position is considered weather and mission essential, and incumbent may be required to report to work under all circumstances, even when the Government is declared closed
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued,
required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or
possessions to operate vehicles.
- The positions require the employee to be CFC Universal Certified to meet EPA regulations when handling FREON.
- Incumbent in this position may be required to work on Saturday and/or Sunday, is subject to shift rotation and emergency 24-hour recall, as
determined by the Supervisor.
- Incumbent will be required to drive government work vehicle. Drives trucks capable of carrying loads weighing up to and including one ton to transport material and equipment to the work site.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a government driver’s license.
- Drives/Transports passenger(s)/workmen more than once per week. Loads and unloads materials and equipment.
- Completes trip tickets and preventive maintenance service records; fills out drive's accident report in case of accident. Performs driver's maintenance in accordance with established rules and regulations.
- Drug testing position. Incumbent subject to drug testing prior to appointment and randomly thereafter in the drug testing program.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Installing, recognizing the causes of faulty equipment, servicing, operating, modifying, repairing, adjusting, and maintaining a variety of domestic and commercial heating, ventilation, refrigeration and air conditioning systems as an expert with a high degree of independence. Have working knowledge of plumbing, steam-fitting, air conditioning and refrigeration, air distribution, sheet metal, brazing, soldering, machine and electrical practices in order to make emergency repairs. Have interpreted and/or apply blueprints and equipment pneumatic control diagrams. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Efforts - Work requires frequent bending, standing, and stooping in tiring positions, although there is occasional work at benches. Required to lift, push or pull a variety of items weighing up to 50 pounds sometimes up to 100 lbs. with assistance from other employees. Some assignments require climbing and must be able to work from ladders in cramped positions and in small spaces.
Working Conditions - Incumbent is subject to noise, cuts, bruises, and electrical shock; and may be required to wear special protective clothing or equipment. The Incumbent is subjected to conditions affected by heat, rain, snow, humidity, dust and grease, extreme cold, indoors and outdoors, roof tops. Hazards: toxic and/or explosive fumes, cuts and bruises, burns by electric shock, burns from chemically treated water, falls from ladders, bursting steam pipes, scalding water, etc.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
