Duties

Prepares and executes the forest management section of the Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan. Utilizes the Geographic Information System to maintain the data base of forest resources. Develops and executes annual work plans for the forestry program. Plans forest resource inventories and surveys pertaining to military, recreational, and wildlife use, reforestation, insect and disease, fuels, volume and value estimation. Monitors contractor performance for compliance with contracts for natural resource operations. Surveys timber stands and compartments, and makes professional evaluations for land management decision-making. Executes annual plans for programs such as the Timber Harvesting Program to include sale design, layout, cruising and marking

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to pass an annual physical to have the ability to work outside in all weather conditions as well as the ability to walk in rough terrain carrying a 50 pound pack. Must have use of both hands.
  • Must be able to obtain, within 30 days of hire, and maintain a valid government driver's license.
  • Must submit a pre-employment Financial Disclosure Statement and annually thereafter, OGE Form 450, in accordance with DoD Directive 5500-7-R (5CFR Part 2634, Subpart I USOGE, 6/08).
  • This position requires successfully completion of a pre-employment physical and recurring medical evaluation thereafter.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Forester: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in forestry; or a related subject-matter field that included a total of at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours of course work was in forestry. The curriculum must have been sufficiently diversified to include courses in each of the following areas: Management of Renewable Resources -- study of the science and art of managing renewable resources to attain desired results. Forest Biology -- study of the classification, distribution, characteristics, and identification of forest vegetation, and the interrelationships of living organisms to the forest environment. Forest Resource Measurements and Inventory -- sampling, inventory, measurement, and analysis techniques as applied to a variety of forest resources. -OR- B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in forestry, or at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours were in forestry. The requirements for diversification of the 24 semester hours in forestry are the same as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Evaluating and managing/controlling forest resources to include timber, soil, land, water, and wildlife and/or fish habitats; 2) Protecting forest lands and properties against fire, insects, disease, floods and/or erosion; and 3) Interpreting and communicating legislation/directives about forest land management. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). -OR- Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Forestry or Environmental Resources. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
