This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
Duties
Utilize various modalities of physical therapy, as prescribed, to include diathermy, hydrotherapy, massage, electrotherapy, ultrasound and therapeutic exercise.
Follow a progressive treatment plan, utilized and designed to restore and maintain range of motion, strength, endurance, coordination, and relaxation.
Instruct patients in muscle strengthening and range of motion exercises
Assess patient's progress towards established goals.
Provide updated status in patient progress reports, as well as other administrative reports.
Share technical expertise with other therapy assistants, physical therapy students and other interdisciplinary team members.
Make recommendations for the patient's rehabilitation and reintegration needs to the interdisciplinary team.
Judge whether the treatment is causing an adverse effect on other conditions not currently under treatment.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Basic Life Support (BLS): This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- All applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random drug testing, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- Tier 1: This position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
- Hepatitis B: Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- Influenza: This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements
- Tuberculosis (TB): This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.
- Credentialing: This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
- Lifting: Lifting up to 45 pounds may be required.
- Lifting (Moderate/Heavy): Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds may be required.
- Physical: This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- Telework: You may be authorized to Telework on a Regular and Situational basis.

Licensure/Certification: This position requires a current, active, valid and unrestricted license or certification as a Physical Therapy Assistant in a state, the District of Columbia, or a territory of the United States.
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes work as an assistant to one of the specialized therapies such as Physical, Occupational, Orthopedic Outpatient, sports medicine, or experience gained as an assistant or aid in patient care where the duties involved actual participation in physical medicine and activities of a hospital or clinic.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
