The position is located within the Geriatric and Extended Care Nursing Service Line at a VA Medical Center in Carrolton, Georgia serving as a Recreation Therapy Assistant assisting with prescribed therapy for the purpose of promoting, restoring and preserving health and well-being of Veterans within the Medical Center, Community Living Centers, Domiciliary and Extended Care settings.
Duties

Explores, reviews, and familiarizes patients' general interest, skills, aptitudes, moods, reactions, physical condition, physical limitation and desire to participate in activities;
Becomes knowledgeable of the patient's condition and treatment goals using patient records, provider consults, team discussions, and patient interviews;
Conducts recreational activities to meet the needs and interests of patients;
Observes patient behavior, recreations and participation in order to gather facts and information;
Evaluates effect of treatment, productivity, ability, progress and attention span;
Compiles report data on direct and indirect patient activities and volunteer activities;
Carries out recurring group activities, such as movement activities;
Demonstrates table game techniques and provides rules/instruction;
Assists with preparation of publicity materials for special activities;
Assists with outings, such as concerts, shopping, day/night field trips, etc.;
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Various work schedules: Sunday through Thursday 9:00am - 5:30pm; Tuesday through Saturday 9:00am - 5:30pm; One evening shift 12:00pm - 8:30pm

Qualifications
English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. ~AND~
To qualify for this position all applicants must meet one of the following:
Specialized Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to successfully perform successfully the duties of a Recreation Assistant, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal Service. Qualifying specialized experience includes: Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; Teacher's Aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~
Education: Successfully completed one-half (1/2) year of graduate education in course work that is directly related to the work of this position (such as therapeutic recreation). Nine (9) semester hours of graduate education in related course work should be considered as satisfying the one-half year of full-time study requirement. Combination: Equivalent combinations of directly related graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, may also be qualifying. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements: The work requires considerable physical exertion in order to perform the assigned duties. The environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of and office or training room setting. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
