Duties

As Chief Innovation Officer at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), you will use innovative processes and technologies to reduce redundancies; promote a One CBP approach to people, process, and technology integration; address ubiquitous needs (e.g., AI/Machine Learning); and focus on positively impacting future problems before they arise. You will work to create an innovation ecosystem beyond technology, collaborating across CBP to: 1) develop CBP's innovation strategy informed by emerging trends and mission requirements; 2) execute CBP's innovation strategy and oversee the evaluation, development, implementation, and scaling of innovative solutions; and 3) provide capabilities to enable innovation, including strategic communications, performance metrics, workforce development, and governance that directly contribute to CBP's law enforcement mission. You will oversee the CBP Innovation Team to leverage cutting edge technologies where applicable and work collaboratively with the Office of Information and Technology and CBP's operational components to implement comprehensive enterprise solutions or process improvements to existing tools. You will be designated as the agency's Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO), with responsibility for advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance and innovation while managing risks from the use of AI. You will collaborate closely with other executives throughout the agency, including the Chief Information Officer, Chief Technology Officer, Chief Data Officer, Chief Human Capital Officer, Chief Counsel, and many others, to ensure innovations are grounded in, but not unnecessarily hampered by, technical, legal, operational, and cultural competencies.

ECQ 5 - BUILDING COALITIONS: The ability to build coalitions internally and with other Federal agencies, State and local governments, nonprofit and private sector organizations, foreign governments, or international organizations to achieve common goals. Technical Qualifications - Mandatory 6. Expert federal law enforcement experience related to border security and/or trade/passenger processing programs. 7. Expert knowledge of and experience leading innovation strategies and programs, to include the design, development, and monitoring of secure and ethical Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions.
