The Laundry Machine Operator performs tasks involved in the washing and drying process; of laundering of linen and personal clothing. The position requires close attention to accuracy; with weights and measures; and following a set procedure for loading and unloading of equipment. The Laundry Machine Operator performs varied combinations of tasks in one or more functional areas of the laundry process such as receiving, soiled sorting, weighing linen, loading and unloading washers and dryers.
Duties
Operates commercial-type laundry washers/extractors, and dryers. Loads and unloads and controls the operation of the machines. Helps in unloading soiled linen from delivery trucks, soiled sorting and maintaining specialty items per hospital. Monitors weight carts, and weigh items on floor scale. Loads washers from a monorail system; or by hand. Maintains daily record of items washed and poundage. Selects proper program depending on type of fabric being washed. Unloads clean linen and directs it to the flatwork ironer or to the dryers. Monitors chemical dispensing system; and when low on supplies move full barrels over to replace empty. Or when working on Dryers loads wet items into dryers, dry and cool down all items properly and then move linen to parts of the laundry for finishing; or help in the folding of certain items. Also works on 100 pound and 50 pound washers to process smaller loads.
Maintains work area, equipment and carts to sanitary standards. Keeps work area clean. Reports the need for equipment maintenance to supervisor or mechanic. Maintains simple load records for production schedules.

Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Strength and stamina for doing heavy physical tasks for long periods, e. g., pulling wet laundry from washer, pushing heavy cans, and lifting bundles weighing over 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Moving heavy bags of soiled and clean linen over head. Intermittent bending and twisting while lifting items out of buckets. Pushing linen into washer or dryers from buckets or sling bags. Stands and walks continuously on concrete floors.
Laundries are very noisy and usually hot and humid, Constantly exposed to the possibility of bruises from moving carts or falls on wet floors in the washing area. A typical hospital laundry setting in the summer is high humidity, heat, odors, and congestion and infection possibilities. In the winter could be exposed to cold temperatures while unloading trucks.
