Duties

The Range Technician performs technical rangeland management work in support of the Emergency Stabilization and Rehabilitation (ESR) program planning and project implementation. Advises specialists at the Field Office level on appropriate vegetation species selections, seeding methods, and seeding rates for proposed ESR treatments. Uses a wide variety of hand tools and specialized equipment to maintain equipment and range project infrastructure. Operates off road vehicles (4x4 pickups, SUVs, and UTVs) and heavy equipment (i.e. ag tractors, forklifts, transport trucks, etc.). Applies laws, regulations, and bureau policies regularly when carrying out weed management and ESR work. Assists in identification of noxious weeds, applies knowledge of Integrated Pest Management policies when selecting/using weed control methods, and monitors treatments of noxious weeds. Assists in collection and synthesis of field data and organization of data in the office, including use of GPS and GIS technology.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. For GS-7 You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples, under detailed guidance: assisted with range improvement projects; used established methods to identify, treat, control, and prevent weed infestations; conducted or assisted with range inventory surveys; operated and maintained weed treatment equipment. For GS-8 You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples, under the guidance of rangeland management specialists: conducted monitoring studies to determine the need for ESR and Rangeland improvements; performed conventional rangeland management duties that have well-established expectations; implemented a variety of precedented weed treatment management activities. For GS-9 You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-08 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples, under direct supervision and general guidance: performed a variety of post-fire management support functions; implemented and monitored ESR treatment plans; participated in rehabilitation and fuels management surveys. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending, and lifting. Work Environment: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air-conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. The incumbent carefully adheres to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.

Education

This position does not have a positive education requirement.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree meets the requirements for GS-8/9. (transcripts required)
