What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? The government-wide direct hire authority for Computer Scientists (Cybersecurity),1550 is being used to fill this position. GS-13 Salary: $103,409 (Step 01) to $134,435 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet the following to satisfy the basic education requirement for Computer Scientist, all grade levels. Bachelor's or higher degree in computer science OR a bachelor's or higher degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-13 level: One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Examples of such experience may include the development of flexible software systems and/or security integrations spanning cloud and on-premise resources, procedures, and processes that leverage knowledge of operation system theory, data structures, computer system architecture, software engineering, and computer communications to automate the enforcement of department and bureau level security policy to improve the security posture of the science center. The ever-changing cybersecurity landscape results in a complex environment that typically require extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure cybersecurity challenges for which guidelines or precedents may not substantially applicable. At this level, computer scientists have wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform work of marked difficulty and responsibility. As the lead cybersecurity representative for the science center, effective written and verbal communication skills are critical for interactions with bureau and department level security personnel and for any in-house developed, security software releases that are routed through the USGS Fundamental Science Practices review process. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
