This position is located in the Office of Medical Product, Specialty, and Tobacco Labs and Programs (OMPSLO) which provides strategic leadership, coordination, infrastructure, and support for excellence and innovation in FDA science that will advance the Agency's ability to protect and promote public health.

Duties

Provides occupational specific technical direction to subordinate scientists by using creative application of scientific principles. Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, sets and adjusts short-term priorities, and prepares schedules; and establishes measurement and analysis systems to ensure actions are timely and reviewed at critical points. Plans and makes recommendations on the future needs in the scientific specialty area such as new analytical instruments, techniques, and methods.

Qualifications

The position of Supervisory Interdisciplinary Scientist falls under the 0401/0403/1320 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-14, you must meet all requirements by 11:59 pm EST on 09/09/2024. Basic Requirements Biologist, GS-0401 A. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Microbiologist, GS-0403 A. Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Chemist, GS-1320 A. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND Minimum Qualifications: Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. The specialized experience must demonstrate one year of full-time work experience , or the equivalent if part-time (for example, an employee working 20 hours per week for a 12-month period should be credited with 6 months of experience.) Experience may have been obtained in either the federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations. GS-14: You must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13, in the Federal service, which includes: experience evaluating product safety and compliance conducting research by analyzing biological, microbiological, or chemical data obtained; developing and proposing solutions to evaluation and regulation issues; advising internal and external parties in the biology, microbiology, or chemistry fields; providing leadership and technical direction to a scientific team. In addition, the applicant must demonstrate in his or her work experience or training that they possess, or have the potential to develop the qualities of successful supervision.
