About the Position: This position is located at Directorate Plans, Training, Mobilization & Security, Range Division, Yakima Training Center, WA.
Duties
Support range operation functions directly related to the safe and efficient utilization of the Yakima Training Center range complex in the use of high-risk weapons, and other hazardous materials on ranges, and training sites.
Supervise approximately 10 employees engaged in GS-07 Range Technicians or Operations work.
Plan and schedule work to be accomplished; provide subordinates the requirements and descriptions of the work to be performed and tracks progress.
Oversee the day-to-day customer support for scheduling and fire-desk operations via the Range Facility Maintenance Support System (RFMSS).
Participate in conferences and scheduling meetings to ensure the integration of range safety criteria in testing and training procedures and provides technical input as to the compatibility of scheduled operations.
Resolve work problems presented by subordinates and recommends or implements ways to improve production/quality of work in the unit.
Prepare performance standards and evaluates performance of subordinates. Interview candidates for positions in the organization, making or approving selections for non-supervisory positions.
Recommend employee promotions or reassignments. Hear and resolve complaints from employees, referring more serious complaints to a higher level supervisor.
Conducts both planned and unscheduled inspections of firing programs and range complex operations.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Incumbent may be required to work evenings, nights and weekends on a rotating shift, to cover 24 hour a day, 7 day a week range operation.
- May be required to report for duty during adverse weather conditions, natural disasters, and emergency situations.
- Incumbent must wear protective clothing and other safety equipment.
- May be required to meet and maintain the minimum physical requirements established for this position in an YTC Wild land Firefighting support role.
- May be required to obtain and continuously meet requirements for a National Interagency Fire Qualifications System (NIFQS) rating of a firefighter.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes knowledge of range operations principles, practices, and requirements, gained through extensive practical experience in the field and as supplemented by training classes, necessary to plan, coordinate/operate , inspect, identify and eliminate hazardous conditions arising from training operations and operations of wide variety of weapons and ammunition on a range. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
