About the Position: This position is located in the Logistics Division, Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. The duties of the position involve fabrication of prescription eyeglasses and other eyewear such as sunglasses, gas masks, inserts, etc. for both military and civilian personnel. The work consists of cutting, edging, and mounting lenses in frames.

Duties

Performs routine inspection and operating maintenance on eyeglass making equipment. Conducts final inspections to completed eyewear. Operates various styles of equipment such as lens measuring instruments, lens marker, automatic bevel edger, heat and chemical treaters, drop ball testers and small hand tools. Fabricates prescription eyeglasses and other eyewear such as sunglasses, gas masks, inserts, etc. Tests lenses for safety. Checks lens power with lens measuring unit, spots optical center, de-centers lenses according to prescriptions and stamps with a cutting line.

I have the ability to perform common tasks of a Prescription Eyeglass Maker. I can operate optical equipment; calibrate edgers; and repair optical equipment. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Working Conditions: Work is performed in a well-lighted ventilated Optical Fabrication laboratory. Hands are subjected to minor cuts, bruises or abrasions and burns. May be required to wear safety glasses and hearing protection in designated areas of the laboratory.
