About the Position: This position is located in the Logistics Division, Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. The duties of the position involve fabrication of prescription eyeglasses and other eyewear such as sunglasses, gas masks, inserts, etc. for both military and civilian personnel. The work consists of cutting, edging, and mounting lenses in frames.

Duties

Performs routine inspection and operating maintenance on eyeglass making equipment. Conducts final inspections to completed eyewear. Operates various styles of equipment such as lens measuring instruments, lens marker, automatic bevel edger, heat and chemical treaters, drop ball testers and small hand tools. Fabricates prescription eyeglasses and other eyewear such as sunglasses, gas masks, inserts, etc. Tests lenses for safety. Checks lens power with lens measuring unit, spots optical center, de-centers lenses according to prescriptions and stamps with a cutting line.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Position may require rotating shift work to include weekends and holidays.
  • Position may require 5% travel away from duty location.
  • Position requires a pre-employment physical.
  • Position requires a personnel security clearance investigation.
  • Incumbent is subject to a medical clearance examination prior to employment. This position may require annual physical or medical surveillance examination.
  • This position may require the incumbent to wear a uniform and/or protective gear.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Prescription Eyeglass Maker~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common tasks of a Prescription Eyeglass Maker. I can operate optical equipment; calibrate edgers; and repair optical equipment. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The position Without More Than Normal SupervisionABILITY TO INTERPRET INSTRUCTIONS, SPECIFICATIONS ETC. (INCLUDING BLUEPRINT READING)Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKNOWLEDGE OF EQUIPMENT ASSEMBLY, INSTALLATION, REPAIR, ETC.Knowledge of MaterialsTechnical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic)Use of Measuring Instruments Physical Effort: The work requires standing, stooping, bending and reaching. Depending on daily assignment may sit or stand for extended periods of time. Close eye and hand coordination is required. The incumbent must frequently handle objects weighing up to 10 Pounds and occasionally objects weighing up to 65 pounds. Working Conditions: Work is performed in a well-lighted ventilated Optical Fabrication laboratory. Hands are subjected to minor cuts, bruises or abrasions and burns. May be required to wear safety glasses and hearing protection in designated areas of the laboratory.
