The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the Command Historian for U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) advising the Combatant Commander & Joint Directors on the historical context of current events & planning, contributing to strategy & operations. Maintain historical records of command activities.

Duties

Performs professional historian duties including research, analysis, and presentation of findings of historical studies concerned with complex, broad, and varied subject matters that require a substantial number of considerations to ensure the Combatant Commander and Joint Directors are informed as to the impact historical context plays on current crisis response or future plans. Develops the plans and policies for, and management and direction of, the Command's History Program including serving as functional manager for subordinate command history offices. Oversees the Command's oral history program, conducting interviews with the Commander, USCENTCOM and key personnel to cover major activities and issues that involved USCENTCOM. Represents the Command by attending historical conferences or other job related meetings and engages in professional pursuits such as writing and critiquing scholarly articles or researching new technological innovations for historical research. Performs supervisory personnel management responsibilities.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions, GS 0170 series + IOR (Individual Occupational Requirement). BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Degree: History; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-13, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes knowledge of professional historical principles, concepts, methodology, and techniques including historical and organizational research. Knowledge and general understanding of federal government history programs and current operations, policies, programs, and activities. Knowledge of U.S. History, military history, and joint operational history principles and practices particularly within the USCENTCOM Area of Responsibility (i.e., Middle East, Central Asia, Africa, Islamic), including military assistance programs and their interrelationships. Perform extensive historical research in a wide variety of sources, critically evaluate sources of information, and establish validity of historical facts.
