This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Northeast Area (NEA), Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC), in Beltsville, MD.
In this position, you will be responsible for performing installation or repair on commercially manufactured locking devices; and maintaining, improving, or reworking locking mechanisms or devices.
Duties
Manufactures, duplicates and accounts for keys and the keying and combining of locking mechanisms.
Determines if locking devices have been tampered with and takes necessary steps to repair or rework the devices.
Determines the work sequence, selection and use of trade tools (hammers, chisels, jibs, hand drills, bits, files, picks, tweezers, tension wrenches and power tools) and the techniques required.
Performs the full installation and repair cycle on commercially manufactured locking devices, as well as reworks the locks to improve or provide new structural or functional capabilities.
Requirements

While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. Physical Effort
The incumbent frequently stands, stoops, bends, kneels and works in awkward positions when installing and opening locks and emergency exit hardware on-site. The work may require lifting security containers or other objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more with assistance.
Working Conditions
Work is performed normally inside but occasionally work is done outside in bad weather or in areas that are drafty and poorly lighted. The incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises and burns while using acetylene torches, brazing torches, and soldering irons. The incumbent is required to wear safety equipment such as, but not limited to, coveralls, safety glasses, hardhat, gloves, and safety shoes.
The health status of personnel is monitored periodically using biologic and serologic tests and physical examinations.
Restrictions against contact with birds and livestock outside the laboratory may apply after entering high security animal facilities that are working with disease agents foreign to the United States.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
