This position is located with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), Director of Operational Logistics, Base Kodiak, Personnel Support Department, Base Kodiak MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) Division in Kodiak, AK.  

Duties

You will serve as the senior Educational Specialist in the Child Development Center (CDC).  You will be responsible for performing a variety of daily operational administrative and child development related duties in support of the center and the Director, including serving as a primary substitute teacher in the absence of a regularly scheduled lead teacher and acting for the CDC Director in the directors' absence.

  • Applicant is required to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • This position requires a Childcare National Agency Check with Inquiries.
  • The position requires a valid Alaska State Driver's License.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: 1.  Degree:  that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position. OR 2.  Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above. Additional Requirements:  1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 is required; OR 1 year of graduate-level education; ORsuperior academic achievement (S.A.A.); OR  Combination of qualifying education and specialized experience S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses. Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of: 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum. Election to membership in a qualifying national scholastic honor society. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.  Some examples of specialized experience are:  -Working in group child care or other work that demonstrated the ability to assist in the operation of a child care center. -Following established childcare policies and procedures. -Providing input to the development and implementation of child development programs. -Teaching age appropriate curriculum for children aged from 6 weeks to 5 years. -Assisting with a childcare food program. **YOU MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT(S) WITH YOUR APPLICATION** National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule, C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
