The Congressional Budget Office is a nonpartisan agency that provides economic and budgetary analysis to the Congress and has been ranked as one of the best places to work in the federal government. CBO seeks a Chief of Media Relations to serve as the primary communications adviser to the CBO Director and other executive leadership and develop CBO's overall communications strategies and initiatives.

Duties

The Chief of Media Relations will be a part of the Director of Legislative and Public Affairs' team to disseminate its analysis as clearly and accurately as possible and to provide the Congress with objective, nonpartisan analysis. Key responsibilities will include:- Proactively engaging with media outlets and responding to external inquiries about CBO analyses in coordination with CBO staff;- Serving as CBO's spokesperson for communicating the agency's analytic products, which are often complex, to various media outlets;- Working with senior leaders to develop CBO's communications and social media strategies; - Preparing CBO's Director and other managers for periodic presentations to various groups and occasional press conferences, radio and TV interviews, and other public-facing events;- Working with CBO's website team to manage the agency's digital content; and- Facilitating interactions with foreign and domestic delegations interested in learning about CBO's activities.

Requirements

  • US citizenship or current permanent residents seeking citizenship

Qualifications

Applicants must have a minimum of five years of experience dealing with the news media and the public; familiarity with the workings of the Congress; excellent judgment; and outstanding verbal and written communications skills. Journalism experience is preferred. In addition, applicants must have a degree in communications, business, public policy or administration, economics, or a related field. Applicants must also have the interpersonal skills to work effectively with stakeholders in the Congress, in professional communities, and within CBO.
