This position is located in United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Pacific West Area (PWA) in Prosser, Washington. In this position, your work will involve maintenance operations support for approximately two different sites and about ten separate study areas.

Duties

Installs laboratory equipment, including simple laboratory fixtures and related plumbing items. Possesses knowledge of the proper operation and use of refrigerant recovery equipment. Lays out, measures, constructs and/or repairs wood or wood substitute items such as concrete forms, shelving, drywall, sheathing, cabinets, soil bins, offices, greenhouses, and other storage buildings. Operates front-end loaders, forklifts, and is responsible for the safety of other employees in the general area of equipment operations.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 09/16/2024. Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a, Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Physical Effort for WG-07 Many of incumbent's duties require moderate to heavy physical labor in lifting, carrying, and positioning heavy components. Incumbent works atop ladders, scaffolding, and in crawlspaces and other confined areas. The work requires close hand and eye coordination, active walking, climbing, and bending, and prolonged periods of actively working on concrete floors and in muddy or otherwise slick areas. Physical Effort for WG-08 Duties require lifting and carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds. Lifting equipment such as forklifts and hand trucks are available for heavier objects. Standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working on ladders (frequently over operating equipment) is required. Work may be performed in uncomfortable and tiring positions. Working Conditions for WG-07 Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Incumbent is subjected to dangers associated with exposure to dust, dirt, mud, noxious or toxic fumes, grease, and other hazards. Much of the work is done in outside environments where incumbent is exposed to winds, high humidity, rainfall, and extremes in temperatures which may range from greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer to less than 20 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter. Work is often done in cramped and in other difficult-to-access areas. The incumbent is subject to the possibility of electric shock, burns, infections, cuts, bruises, broken bones, and other injuries. Working Conditions for WG-08 Frequently works in areas of temperature extremes of 100°F and above or cold extremes. Noise level is high, and to the extreme requiring ear plugs at times. Some work situations may be dirty, dusty, and greasy. Protective devices such as goggles, masks. and gloves may be needed frequently. Occasionally works in contaminated areas and is exposed to infections or diseases when changing filters and servicing sewer lift stations. May also be subjected to noxious gases, steam burns, broken bones, electrical shock, bruises, cuts, and scrapes, irritations in eyes, skin and respiratory tract from pesticides, oils, refrigerants, and sawdust. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
