About the Position: Maintenance Mechanic within the Research and Development Fabrication Group performing tasks associated with test equipment, and other industrial and laboratory equipment and facilities which are used to conduct research, development and experimental projects. Assigned tasks increase knowledge of the trade and develop skill for advancing to the Journeyman level.
Duties
Performs full range of plumbing tasks including estimating material requirements, i.e., pipe, fittings, and fixtures in the sizes, types, or lengths needed.
Plans and completes projects from initial layout to final assembly or installation. Selects lumber, materials, and supplies required to complete assigned work.
Insures that installed components are level and accurately aligned with others parts of the structure.
Locate and marking spots for openings through which pipes are to pass or in which equipment will be installed
Performs the full range of carpentry skills and techniques in repairing, constructing, altering and maintaining wood/wood substitute components of buildings and structures where accuracy, spacing.
Clear difficult stoppages in drainpipe.
Perform assembling of pipe sections and hanging or laying of assemblies into position.
Perform work to repair and modify a variety of equipment and systems that achieve regulated climatic conditions.
Perform basic principles of air conditioning.
Prepares surfaces for painting and applies coating materials to exterior or interior of buildings, dwellings and offices, or their furnishings.
Prepares surfaces by methods such as smoothing with pumice and rottenstone, filling, shaping and leveling with metal and synthetic resins and mixing and applying primer.
Selects lumber, materials, and supplies required to complete assigned work.
Works from drawings, sketches, blueprints and own knowledge of construction methods/techniques.
Requirements

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanicwithout more than normal supervision, performing maintenance and repair tasks on electrical, plumbing, and mechanical components, equipment, and systems, measure and cut material to required lengths dimension, work from oral instructions, blueprints and work orders, install rafters studs, sills, plates, plates, braces, joints, floors and sub-floors. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort: The work frequently handles objects weighing up to 10 pounds, and occasionally handles objects weighing up to 50 pounds without the assistance of lifting devices. The work involves standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding, and pulling and pushing at various stages of assignments to assemble items and install assemblies.
Working Conditions: The work is done in a well lighted, heated, ventilated shop with concrete floors; in areas that are noisy and dirty; and occasionally outside. He is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, burns, and broken bones. The tasks may involve discomfort while wearing helmets, aprons, gloves, safety glasses, hard hats, and other protective equipment as required by changing assignments.
