The Western District of Kentucky covers 53 western counties in Kentucky. The main office is in Louisville, Kentucky, with staffed offices in Bowling Green and Paducah and an unstaffed office in Owensboro. The office presently has 42 attorneys and 48 support staff. The office seeks to maintain the highest standards of excellence in the enforcement of federal laws and the representation of the United States.
Duties
The United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of Kentucky is seeking applications from experienced litigators for one Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) vacancy in the Criminal Division in either the Bowling Green branch office or in the Louisville main office.
Assistant United States Attorneys assigned to the Criminal Division prosecute a variety of federal criminal cases involving fraud, public corruption, money laundering, immigration offenses, and violent crimes. The preferred applicant will have experience in the investigation and prosecution of a wide range of violent crimes to include those involving firearms and narcotics trafficking. A successful record of working with law enforcement personnel during the investigation and prosecution of cases is crucial. Responsibilities include grand jury, trial, and appellate practices. The successful applicant will receive extensive Department of Justice training, including trial advocacy courses.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as training and experience progress.
All initial attorney appointments to the Department of Justice are made on a 14-month (temporary) basis pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation. Temporary appointments may be extended or made permanent without further competition.
Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1 year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.
United States citizenship is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Outstanding academic record; at least one year of litigation experience; strong legal research and writing ability; strong advocacy skills; superior organizational skills; and computer literacy skills. Applicants will be expected to do independent legal research and writing and shall be substantially self-sufficient in preparing day-to-day correspondence and pleadings. Preferred applicants will have excellent communication skills and demonstrated team building and leadership skills.
If not a member of the Kentucky Bar, a successful applicant is encouraged to become a member of the Kentucky Bar within a reasonable period of time.
