The Security Assistant monitors and operates physical security systems, such as alarms and access controls, responds to emergencies, and manages communications within the Police Service. Responsibilities include assessing security situations, dispatching law enforcement, managing key inventories, and maintaining detailed records and reports. The role demands independent judgment, knowledge of security procedures, and proficiency in using various security and communication equipment.
Duties
Performs alarm and access monitoring, traces access patterns, and assigns or removes user permissions.
Opens and secures doors remotely during routine and emergency operations.
Assesses on-scene behavior to determine when to dispatch law enforcement or other personnel.
Responds to alarm systems monitoring various emergencies, including fire, access, intrusion, duress/panic, medical, and psychiatric emergencies.
Performs system checks on a variety of equipment used in the dispatch center.
Operates various communications and security equipment, such as computers, multi-frequency radios, and multi-line telephone systems.
Maintains accurate key inventory and accountability database.
Utilizes an electronic system to complete vehicle registration tasks and issue decals and permits as authorized by policy.
Monitors and receives routine and emergency calls needing police, fire, medical, or other emergency services.
Maintains contact with law enforcement units on assignment.
Monitors and directs responses to security and life safety communications, radio dispatches, telephone calls, and other emergency communication circuits.
Compiles and prepares reports related to events occurring in the operation of the police control center.
Performs and documents emergency callbacks when necessary.
Operates an established vehicle registration and visitor management program.
Maintains accountability of police officer badges issued and associated logs.
Coordinates with various federal, state, and local law enforcement officials for emergency situation coordination.
Conducts equipment inventories and completes records and logs.
Enters, updates, and retrieves information from a variety of computer systems and sensitive databases.
Utilizes state and national systems to access law enforcement information to support field operations and investigations.
Queries items such as criminal histories, arrest warrants, drivers' records, vehicle registrations, stolen property, and firearms.

Qualifications

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: monitoring and managing physical security systems, coordinating emergency responses, and operating communication equipment in a dispatch environment; managing key inventories, handling secure information databases, compiling detailed reports, and troubleshooting security equipment; demonstrated knowledge of relevant security regulations and strong customer service skills, especially in high-stress situations. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 4 years above high school. OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond 2-years above high school.
