This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Northeast Area (NEA), at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC), in Beltsville, MD.
In this position, you will assist with plumbing, sheet metal, electrical, carpentry, painting, and masonry duties.
Duties
Performs other related duties such as replacing broken spindles, door knobs, doorstops, and brackets.
Cuts and bends steel reinforcement bars and places them in forms for concrete.
Assists carpenters in building scaffolds, racks, shelves, animal feeders, platforms, forms for concrete, etc.
Sets and adjusts die to cutter or threader, and measures, cuts, and threads lengths of pipe by hand or power machine.
Requirements
- You must be a US Citizen or US National.
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
- Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
- Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.

- Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid State Commercial Driver’s License (Class B or higher) to operate vehicles and equipment with a gross
vehicle weight of over 26,000 lb.
- Incumbent is subject to call-back situations to make emergency repairs or for snow/ice removal.
Qualifications
In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 09/11/2024. Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a, Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Physical Effort
Works from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms at heights up to 60 feet, and where the surfaces, systems, and equipment worked on may be in cramped or hard-to-reach places. Required to walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and generally work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, handles, carries, and sets up materials, parts and/or equipment that may weigh up to 90 lb.
Working Conditions
Works inside and outside of buildings in all types of weather. Work is performed in ducts, chases, tunnels, attic crawl spaces, and sometimes under extremes of temperature. Subject to danger of falling from ladders, scaffolds, and through floor openings, and is subject to cuts, bruises, punctures, burns, scalds, dust, dirt, noise and hazards of falling objects. Subject to irritation of eyes, skin, and respiratory tract from sanding and dusting surfaces.
